Aircraft Equipment Mechanic Career Working Environment

Mechanics usually work in hangars or in other indoor areas, although they can work outdoors - possibly in unpleasant weather - when hangars are full or when repairs must be made quickly. Mechanics often work under time pressure to maintain flight schedules or, in general aviation, to keep from inconveniencing customers. Mechanics have a tremendous responsibility to maintain safety standards, which can cause the job to be stressful. Frequently mechanics must lift or pull objects weighing as much as 70 pounds. They often lie, stand or kneel in awkward positions and must sometimes work in precarious positions on ladders or scaffolds. Ear protection is necessary, as noise and vibration are common when engines are being tested. Aircraft mechanics usually work 40 hours a week on eight-hour shifts around the clock; overtime work is frequent.
