Birmingham's heritage has always been extraordinary. It used to be that Southerners would take the train to Birmingham to get a taste of the big city. Now that big cities have popped up all across the South, Birmingham has found other, more innovative ways to be distinctive. While it still boasts (and improves upon) the amenities of a major metropolis, the city has now focused on the minutiae that will continue to distinguish it. This has paid off to result in Birmingham at its best-a city that is as aware of its history as it is of its future. It's a city that has analyzed its Southern roots and used them as a basis for an extensive and public analysis of African-American history and heritage. It's a city that focuses as much on its recreation (particularly golf) as it does on its "high culture" (especially art). And it's a city that is still friendly and accommodating, even as it grows.
