Clinical Laboratory Technician Career Details

Laboratory tests play a vital role in any hospital. With this in mind, technicians take on a fair amount of responsibility. The technicians' main focus involves body fluids, tissues and cells. Through the tests they perform, they look for parasites, bacteria and any other microorganisms that could create problems. They also check the chemical content of fluids, match blood for any transfusions, and test the drug levels in the blood.

A technician also prepares any specimens that are necessary for the examination. This may include counting cells, and then determining whether any such cells are abnormal. Technicians then analyze the results and prepare them for the physician to review. With the recent developments in the technology of computers, the work of the technician has changed a bit. A regular day tends to be less hands-on as the computers do most of the testing. The job is more analytical in nature as technicians must go through the results and analyze the relevant data.

Comparatively, technicians tend to have less complex tests to run when compared to Clinical Laboratory Technologists. They still prepare specimens, and operate automated analyzers like a technologist, but they would have detailed instructions to follow. Technicians usually work under the supervision of medical and clinical laboratory technologists.
