Clinical Laboratory Technician Career Required Training

For the most part, clinical lab technicians have a bachelors degree in a health related major. Plenty of universities offer relevant majors that prepare students to become Clinical Laboratory Technicians. However, a university isn't the only route an individual can take. Some may become qualified through a combination of education, on the job training, and specialized training.

Recently the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act was passed which requires workers who perform highly complex tests to have at least an associate's degree. The technicians, who don't have a four year degree already, may take two routes to become eligible for this line of work. They either earn their associates degree from a junior college or a certificate from the armed forces, a trade school, or from a hospital.

There are 503 fully accredited programs for medical and clinical technicians. All the programs are approved by The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. It's easy to see that there are plenty of places to become qualified for this line of work.

Lastly, some states require laboratory personnel to be licensed or registered. This varies from state to state, so those interested should inquire into the state department or its health boards of occupational licensing. The process of becoming licensed is voluntary and a nongovernmental organization usually grants the necessary recognition.
