Pharmacy Technician Career Details

Pharmacy technicians assist in the administration of medication and other healthcare products to patients. In terms of the medicine itself, the technicians handle rudimentary tasks. This may include counting tablets and labeling bottles. Since they are assisting the pharmacist, they must refer any questions regarding prescriptions and drug information to that very pharmacist.

State rules and regulations can have a direct impact on what a technician does daily. Some states allow them to receive paperwork requesting prescriptions for refills. Pharmacy technicians may also receive prescriptions sent from a doctor's office. In terms of the prescription itself, a technician may verify the prescription to see whether it's complete and accurate.

To prepare a prescription, technicians must retrieve, pour, weigh, measure, and sometimes mix the medication. After this they prepare the labels, grab the appropriate container, and affix the prescription and auxiliary labels to the container. Once that is completed, they file and price the prescription. The pharmacist must then approve this before the patient is allowed to purchase it.

A pharmacy technician who works in a hospital tends to have different responsibilities. They handle patient charts and deliver medicine to the patient's rooms. However, much like the technicians that work in a retail pharmacy, they still need a pharmacist's approval before administering medicine to the patient.
