System Administrator Career Working Environment
Computer support specialists and systems administrators typically work in well-lit offices in well-lit, comfortable surroundings or in computer laboratories. Most work 40 hours a week, but this may include evening or weekend work if the employer requires computer support over extended hours. Overtime may be necessary when technical problems arise. Like other workers who spend large amounts of time in front of a computer terminal typing at a keyboard, they are susceptible to eyestrain, back discomfort and hand and wrist problems.
These employees constantly interact with customers and fellow employees as they answer questions and give advice. Those employed as consultants are usually away from their offices, sometimes spending months working at a client's office. As computer networks expand, more computer support specialists and systems administrators should be able to connect remotely to provide technical support to users. Eventually, this capability should reduce the level of travel to the customers' workplace.
